A question for you MT owners out there.
What is the calendar inspection interval for your prop?
I'm just getting my Hartzell done at the moment so I'm curious.

Thanks for that..
is the inspection time (TBO usually but maybe calendar) shortened for aerobatic aircraft? My Hartzell goes from 2000 TBO to 1000 hrs if on an aerobatic aircraft.. I'll never see it but its interesting. Mine would have much higher polar moments of inertia so maybe the light blades don't need this?

Mine was a pain in the rear. the previous engineers had all indicated a 60 month inspection so I checked in the owners manual.. it said that any installed or overhauled from 1991 the internals needed painting so the inspection was 60 months until painted then 72 month. Makes sense. But it didn't say if or when the factory started doing it.

I emailed the factory and removed the prop 3 days later. on day 4 I got a reply @$%^$&!! . mine is painted isn't it ! Bugger it.. I'm getting it done anyhow. At least it can be done locally. MT over here can only be done in Hamilton.

Great.. another $800 I could have done without spending.
The life of an aeroplane owner. :!: :!:

GR,

Not sure about the aerobatic limits, or if there are any.

The numbers I quoted came from my owners logbook, as completed by the company that assembled it here in Perth. No mention of aerobatics.

I've had it almost 2 years and there's a comment in the handbook (not the logbook) that mentions something about 24 months preceeding the 72 months, for a total time of 96 months.

It's not that clear to me - the English loses a little in the translation - but I think it might mean that your 72 months starts 24 months after delivery, even if it's not yet in service.

I guess this is to allow for hardening of seals with age, etc., irrespective of whether it's flying.

thanks Rob
I just spoke with a friend who has an MT on his Extra. He seems to think aerobatics reduce both times. I don't know if his engineers have that right or not but the aeros he does are pretty full on.

I would expect that the stress on the prop would be a lot higher in the Extra. Does anyone ever toss around a Falco like airshow guys in Extras?

Was speaking to a friend who flies the Furio in airshows here. When they first flew it they has Giovannis 2 blade Hartzell on it. Since then they have gone to a 3 blade MT prop. Giovanni reckons its cost them 10 knots. Seems like a lot but I would imagine this kind of info is hard to find since I doubt many would swap props to experiment with.
Something for people to consider who may be looking at buying certain props.

Not surprised! I have seen several other claims that the 3 blade prop is generally slower in cruise, but exhibits a somewhat better climb rate. I expect this would be the case with the Furio.

Yeah it fits the theory.. The climb seems good in the thing.. they quite often fly them together so I must enquire some more.. I was a bit busy yesterday so had little time to talk.. got roped in to operating the comms van at the local fly-in / airshow.
saw some terrible airmanship.. but that is another story.

I've heard similar - 3 blades cost you a bit in cruise but I hope it's not 10 knots! I can live with 2 or 3 but if it's 10 I'll get run down by RV's.

3 bladed props loose it to efficiency against 2 bladed ones. From what I remember in the RV (flying ones) world, the 2 vs 3 cruise or top speed difference on a 160HP was in the region of 6-7 knots.
One positive aspect of the 3 blade is the noise reduction, quite important here in central Europe. Most glider tugs are equipped with 4 blade props and you sure can hear it (not).
